Scott Stanzel Managing Vice President of Corporate Communications, Capital One
Scott Stanzel is the Managing Vice President of Corporate Communications at Capital One, a position he has held since September 2017. Stanzel leads a 45-person team that is responsible for all aspects of public relations strategy and execution for Capital One, including media relations for the numerous lines of business, issues and reputation management and the proactive communications programs to advance the mission of the company.
Prior to joining Capital One, Stanzel served in several different roles at Amazon from 2011 to 2017. He was the Director of Worldwide Marketplace Communications for the online retailer and was responsible for leading public relations programs for Amazon’s growing third-party seller business, which accounts for more than half of all Amazon sales. In 2015 and 2016, Stanzel was Amazon’s Director of Operations Communications. In this role, he led media and public relations related to Amazon’s fulfillment centers, transportation, customer service, community relations, Prime Now (primenow.com), and Prime Air (amazonprimeair.com); the internal communications strategy and execution for Amazon’s fulfillment network and customer service organizations; and the Amazon fulfillment center public tours program (amazonfctours.com). His previous roles at the company include leading the North American consumer public relations and managing policy communications.
Before joining Amazon, he led Stanzel Communications, a public relations firm based in Seattle, Washington, which provided interview training, crisis communications and media strategy services to corporate clients and political candidates.
In 2010, Stanzel served as campaign manager for Defeat 1098, the successful effort to stop the state income tax proposed in ballot initiative 1098 in Washington State. From September 2006 until January 2009, Stanzel served as Deputy Assistant to the President and Deputy White House Press Secretary for President George W. Bush. Stanzel also served President Bush as National Press Secretary for the Bush-Cheney ’04 campaign, as spokesman in the White House Office of Media Affairs from 2001 through 2003 and in various roles during the Bush for President campaign in 1999 and 2000.
Stanzel’s other roles in politics include working for U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley, the Lightfoot for U.S. Senate campaign and Bob Dole’s 1996 campaign for president. He served as a Senior Public Relations Manager for Microsoft Corporation in Redmond, Washington, in 2005 and 2006.
Prior to his time at Amazon, Stanzel was a frequent contributor to Fox News, CNN, POLITICO and other media outlets. He is a native of Sac City, Iowa, and a 1995 graduate of Iowa State University. Stanzel was a member of the Iowa State University Alumni Association Board of Directors from 2007 to 2014, serving as the 2012-2013 chair. He was a member of the Greenlee School of Journalism Advisory Council at Iowa State from 2007 to 2012. He is an avid triathlete and has completed two 140.6 mile Ironman triathlon races. He and his wife, Priscilla, have three daughters and live in McLean, Virginia.
