Andrea McCarren Vice President and Chief Content Officer, PenFed

Andrea McCarren

I’m a former television journalist who raised service dogs on the job to change someone’s life. I never expected it to be mine.

A Labrador Retriever named Bunce, and a Labrador-Golden Retriever cross named Nigel helped me discover my passion: covering important veterans’ issues and sharing inspiring stories about vets, active duty service members and military families.

That brought me to PenFed Credit Union. Many individuals and organizations talk about helping veterans. PenFed acts. I’m proud to have joined this military-friendly employer as Vice President and Chief Content Officer of its new division, PenFed Digital.

We will showcase inspiring stories of military and community service across all of PenFed’s social and digital platforms. From PenFed’s 1.8 Million members to its 2,700 employees, we are eager to share the positive impact they have on our country.

My interest in the military community is in my blood. I’m extremely proud of my Dad’s service in the Air Force and Air National Guard, where he rose to the rank of Brigadier General. He is currently inurned at Arlington National Cemetery.

Prior to PenFed, I was fortunate to be a longtime journalist. Most recently, I served as a multimedia investigative reporter with WUSA, the CBS station in Washington, DC. My work earned 22 Emmy Awards, three Edward R. Murrows, and a national Gracie Award for a report on rape in the military. I frequently served as a contributor to USA Today and in 2006, was awarded a year-long Nieman Fellowship at Harvard University.

My career includes covering the Clinton White House for ABC News, where I traveled weekly with the President on Air Force One. I served as a DC-based correspondent for NBC News, covering the White House, Capitol Hill and the Pentagon. My stops in local news included Miami, Portland, OR, Wichita, KS and Savannah, GA.

My Anthropology degrees from Vassar College and the London School of Economics prepared me well for the world of journalism.
